Riding through the monsoon in Bengaluru: a delivery rider's guide

Rain slows deliveries, and at some companies that shows up in pay. Zepto counts weather and time taken in its fee, while Flipkart says its payouts don't depend on delivery speed. This guide covers pay in the rain, choosing your hours, gear and keeping your papers safe.

How wet days can change what you earn

Pay models react to slow days in different ways:

  • Zepto: the service fee is worked out from distance, time taken, demand, traffic, weather and customer rating, so a rainy day feeds into the fee.
  • Amazon Now: waiting time between deliveries is paid as part of the block minimum pay. But ending a block early lowers the pay, so think twice before booking a block on a day you may cut short.
  • Flipkart Minutes: payouts are not linked to delivery speed.
  • Per-delivery pay (Swiggy, Zomato, Shadowfax, XpressBees): fewer deliveries in a slow hour means less pay for that hour.

Choosing your hours when it pours

Several companies let you decide how much you work, which helps on heavy-rain days:

  • Swiggy and Swiggy Instamart: part-time or full-time shifts.
  • Porter: part-time or full-time; earnings depend on your time online.
  • Rapido: no fixed shift, with at most 12 hours online a day.
  • Shadowfax: no minimum number of deliveries per day.
  • Amazon Flex and Amazon Now: you book blocks, so you can skip a block on a stormy day.
  • Ekart: its page talks of flexible working hours.

Rain gear that keeps you working

  • A two-piece raincoat (jacket and trousers) is easier to ride in than a long coat.
  • Keep your phone in a waterproof pouch or a zip bag, with a cloth to wipe the screen.
  • Carry a power bank, so a flat phone doesn't end your shift early.
  • Wear a helmet with a clear visor. Amazon Flex and Amazon Now ask for a helmet on a two-wheeler or e-bike.
  • Bright or reflective clothing helps others see you in grey light.
  • Shoes with a good grip help when you step off the bike on wet roads.

Your bike and papers in the wet season

  1. Check brakes, tyres and lights before the rains set in.
  2. Slow down, keep more distance, and avoid riding through standing water you can't see the bottom of.
  3. Keep photos of your licence, RC and insurance on your phone, and the originals dry at home.
  4. Keep your vehicle insurance current. Zepto asks for vehicle insurance as the law requires, and Rapido for valid insurance and a PUC.
